A Warm Welcome to McKinley Hill

Brighting the Neighborhood

Have you seen @liz.morrow’s gateway to McKinley Hill welcome sculpture? This new art installation was shaped by the community that calls it home and is bringing a welcomed brightness to the neighborhood in these cold winter months.

Art has a way of grounding us in place, telling the stories of those who shape it.

Local printmaker, muralist, and multidisciplinary artist Liz Morrow created this sculpture as part of the McKinley Hill public art cohort, drawing inspiration from the deep investment and pride of the historic neighborhood.

“The way that they had invested in this community and the way that they had really claimed this place... I wanted to create a sort of gateway sculpture to signify that you’re entering this community and also give homage to those community members who have spent a lot of time and effort making this community feel the way that it does.”Art has a way of grounding us in place, telling the stories of those who shape it.

This piece will only be on display for 6 months, so don’t miss your opportunity to stop by and check it out as you drive up McKinley Ave. And be sure you’re following Liz as she creates a permanent public art piece for the McKinley Hill Overlook just a couple blocks away from this one.

What’s a piece of Tacoma public art that resonates with you? Where would you like to see more initiatives like this one in our city?

Ashley @ Foster's Creative

I've called the PNW home for 28 years and while I don't have a traditional schooling background, I have always been drawn to creative outlets. I've jokingly referred to myself as a serial starter. Photography, writing, knitting, sewing, painting, yoga, mindfulness, the list goes on - you name it, I've started it and told myself, and everyone else, it was going to be my thing. I've come to love my desire to dabble in whatever current endeavor has my attention. Permitting myself to try new things has proven to be a valuable and fun approach to life.

My role at Foster's Creative came about serendipitously and has allowed me to engage and interact with my community in ways I've always dreamed. As a mom, and someone who found themselves as the new kid growing up, I've come to really appreciate the deep roots that can be planted within a city and community. I am happy to be watering my seeds here in Tacoma with my little family, grateful every day to get to work for and with my community in the capacities I do.
