The First One Back

A Little Sun

It had been a gray week leading up to this. The kind of stretch where you forget what the sun looks like. But that afternoon it was back, the light sharp and warm, a breeze moving through, birds audible somewhere nearby. Tacoma coming back to life a little.

This is Lunchbreak Live, and this was the first one of the season.

Sam Parker (@sam__park3r) opened things up with a couple acoustic folk rock songs. The kind of songs that sit comfortably in your chest, and make the day feel like it's just passing by you rather than coming at you. Sam talked about his new album called “As of Late” which features songs about his recently passed mom.you wish for five more songs.

And then came the saxophone.

That part caught me off guard in the best way. Jeff Chang (@j_chang_nerd) stepping in after Sam, two completely different worlds sharing the same corner of sidewalk. It had no business working as well as it did. But it did.

A small crowd formed, which was honestly one of the best parts to watch. A few people looked like they had just come out of a class at People’s Pilates and decided they weren’t in any hurry to leave. Someone had a blanket and just got down on the ground with it, settled in. That kind of thing. Easy and unplanned.

The whole thing came and went. People watched, a few more stopped as they walked by, and then it was over. Understated in the best way.

That’s what makes this series worth doing. It’s not a big production. It’s not meant to be. It’s a musician on a stool and whoever happens to be outside on their lunch break, and there’s something genuinely refreshing about that. Live music doesn’t always need a venue or a ticket or a reason. Sometimes it just needs a corner and a little bit of sun.

Glad this one found both.
